Ann Burris for
The Wall Street Journal
For the Wall Street Journal's long-running My Ride column, I photographed Ann Burris — a 63-year-old retired telecom executive living in Fort Lauderdale — with the 2008 Audi R8 that originally belonged to her late husband. What began as a way of keeping a piece of him close turned into something Ann hadn't planned for: an obsession with track driving. She now describes herself, openly and proudly, as a speed fiend. My Ride, written by A.J. Baime for twelve years and nearly six hundred installments before he wrapped the column, was at its best a love story between a person and the machine that refused to stay in the background of their life. Ann's chapter is one of those — a quiet portrait of a woman who inherited a car and, somewhere along the way, inherited a second life from it.
